What to print on a homemade cake box label in India

Updated October 7, 2026 · Based on the FSSAI Labelling and Display Regulations, 2020 (compendium Version VIII, 09.09.2025)

This is a plain-English summary to help you plan a label, not legal advice. Rules change and some items depend on your product and your FSSAI registration type. Check the official regulation PDF or ask your local food safety officer before you print.

If you bake from home and sell boxed cakes, brownies or cookies on Instagram or in a local group, buyers increasingly expect a proper label. Regulation 5 of the FSSAI labelling rules lists what a pre-packaged food label carries. Here's what that looks like on a cake box.

The checklist

WhatWhat it looks like on a cake box
Name of the food"Eggless Chocolate Walnut Brownies", not just "Brownies by Meera".
List of ingredientsTitled "Ingredients", in descending order of weight: refined wheat flour, sugar, butter, cocoa powder, walnuts...
Allergen "Contains" lineA separate line such as Contains: Wheat, Milk, Nut. See our allergen guide.
Veg / non-veg symbolGreen circle in a green square for veg; brown triangle in a brown square for non-veg (including cakes with egg). See the symbol guide.
Food additivesDeclared in the ingredient list by class and name or INS number, e.g. "raising agent (500(ii))".
Name and full addressOf the brand owner (you). A home address is common for home bakers; you decide what you're comfortable printing.
FSSAI logo + licence/registration numberYour 14-digit number from your FSSAI registration or licence.
Net quantity"Net wt: 500 g" or "6 pieces" as applicable.
Batch / lot numberAny code you use per bake, e.g. "Batch: 0710A".
Date markingDate of manufacture or packing, and "Use by" or "Expiry". "Best before" can be added. Short-shelf-life items use DD/MM/YY.
Price and consumer careMRP (incl. of all taxes) and a phone or email for complaints.
Storage instructionsIf the date depends on it, e.g. "Keep refrigerated, consume within 3 days".

The trick: one design, write-in boxes

Most of the label is the same every bake. Only the dates, batch and sometimes price change. So print the fixed parts and leave neat boxes for "Packed on", "Use by" and "Batch" that you fill with a pen. One sheet order lasts many bakes and still looks professional.
